Magit’s Doll

Produced by Ann Verrall & Off Centre Collective
Created by Magit Poulette, students of We’koqom’a Mi’kmaw School, Rob Smith, Lindsay Dobbin and Ann Verrall

Elder Magit Poulette shares a story with students at the We’koqom’a Mi’kmaw School in Waycobah Cape Breton about her experience at the Shubenacadie Residential School. When she arrived at age four her doll was taken away from her so she created dolls from her cleaning rags. As an adult Magit searched for a doll that reminded her of the doll that was stolen from her. Magit tells her story and teaches students how she made her rag dolls.

This Beacon has grown out of the creative collaborations between Danna Henderson, Janine Windolph and Quiver Artist Collective member Ann Verrall.

This Time Last Winter

Danna Henderson & Ann Verrall on the set of This Time Last Winter

Directed/Co-written by Ann Verrall
Leading Actor: Danna Henderson
Produced/Co-written by Sarah Abbott

In This Time Last Winter a young woman, Iona, cannot remember a violent incident she recently suffered.  When her mother tells her it was inflicted by Iona’s indie rock musician boyfriend, Wes, Iona refuses to believe it. To find out for herself, she returns to the location of her last memory, his funky warehouse apartment.  Through interracial relationships and the healing potential of a talking circle, the film explores violence in young relationships and the moment of choice we face when the urge to be violent surfaces.

Cross Cultural Conversations

Saskatchewan filmmakers Janine Windolph and Trudy Stewart came to Nova Scotia to engage with Nova Scotia film and theatre artists, students and Indigenous communities to explore themes of reconciliation and how we can de-colonize our approach to sharing stories. Through discussion, artist presentations, screenings and interactive Forum Theatre, the public was invited to take part in the conversation. Events took place in Halifax, Millbrook First Nation and We’koqom’a First Nation Cape Breton.
